Dust and Shadow first takes place around 0 BPD at the point of the first chapter of the novel. Throughout the chapters the time advances. The first chapter tell us of Isabella Mthendale's life within the large city named Seatown.
Her life is mainly dull and uninteresting, but the turn of events change as when he decides to go for a relaxing walk, she finds a strange egg. Unknowing at the time, that inside holds a dragon, she takes the egg back home and places it under her bed. Her plans at that point are to find out what the strange object is (she thinks it to be a stone of sorts) and try and sell it for gold.
When the egg hatches, Isabella then noticed that it was in fact an egg. She is stunned at what she sees in front of her, and is eager to know further of the small beautiful creature that is stumbling around her house.
As Isabella returns home one day, she finds that the dragon has been taken, so she rushes to find her and descovers that her father is attempting to kill the young creature, unknowing of what it is and seeing it as dangerous. Isabella manages to stop her father and they come to understand and later find out that she is a dragon, a member of an extinct species.
When the story goes on, Isabella takes Purple-eye (a name she gave her due to her large purple eyes) on a trip in how to fly, however all falls short, as a large dragon, an adult one, flies out of the sky and snatches the young Purple-eye out of the air, and flies off with her.
Isabella is then driven by grief and decides to use all her gold to buy a horse, weapons and venture off into the dreaded plains and lands of Amsnorth.
The human breaks free of the city, with help of a young elf named Wayla, and they flee into the trees and seek Greatwood Forest, where they can quickly pass across the Western Territories. However events cause trouble and Isabella is captured by the Wood-Elves, led by Princess Mymera and she is taken to Queen Nymeria, the queen of all elves.
The elves take her in and train her in the ways of swordplay, before she is ready to leave and seek her dragon. Isabella learns of her destiny within the trees of Greatwood City and eventually leaves to persue her dragon further.
Isabella passes across more lands and comes across the legendary and brutal orcs. After presenting them a gift, she is allowed to travel with them for protection against the spawn tainted lands, unti, she reaches the Shard Mountains, the place where she believes her dragon to be.
The lands prove difficult for Isabella Mthendale, but she manages to drive past them and eventually says fare well from the orcs and rushes off to find her dragon.
